Creative Learning Project at Alford Queen Elizabeth's Grammar School

Dramatist Al Muir recently ran a 3-day workshop with Year 9 students from Alford Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School as part of the Creative Learning project funded by CfBT Lincolnshire School Improvement Service. Focusing around the issues of Citizenship, students first created short dramatic pieces which pulled controversial and sensitive topics from the past such as racial segregation in 1950s America and the persecution of the Jews in Germany in the 1930s. Parallel with these seemingly distant atrocities, students then scripted and performed pieces based around occurrences of similar maltreatment which litter today’s immigration policies in Britain. By empathising with the persecuted of the past, the pieces encouraged a more critical understanding of the modern day context encircling asylum seekers and promoted the ever-contemporary need for mutual respect and understanding for others. After 3 days of working with Al and teacher Roger Belton, the students performed the play in front of family and friends. Al said the students had been “brilliant to work with”.

The Ancient Stonework of St. Mary's Church, Morcott - Book Review

This book represents the fourth in Peter Rollings' Ancient Stonework of Rutland series, this Morcott booklet is another sumptuously illustrated sonnet to stonework. Like Tickencote, Wing and Egleton before, he has meticulously drawn & described all the really ancient, interesting, thought-inspiring stonework that the building has to offer. It's not a typical church guide. It doesn't list the whole history of the building. It focuses on the Norman, possibly Saxon stonework, because that is the period that most interests him. It was a pivotal time.

The interesting text that accompanies the drawings is full of little nuggets & musings, like how unusually hot those days in early April were, & his wizardry with bamboo canes & string to survey the arches. Many historic buildings have a guide book, but not many can boast the attention to detail, the sheer phalanxes of ink that march across these 32 pages. It's not your average church guide...more a quest for extraordinariness, for mysteries & ideas, somehow carved & stowed long ago in those fabulous stones.

'The Ancient Stonework Of St Mary's Church, Morcott, Rutland, Drawings 1997' is available for a £3.14 cheque & A5 SAE to Peter K. Rollings, PO Box 318, Peterborough, PE1 2YG. Email pkrollings@yahoo.co.uk, website www.geocities.com/pkrollings.

Have-a-go music workshops prove a hit in Lincoln city centre

A day of free music workshops proved a real hit with shoppers, tourists and passers-by in Lincoln city centre last week, with over 200 people stopping to try their hand at drumming and turntablism during the course of the day.

Drums & Decks was run by Lincolnshire Music Development Agency soundLINCS in partnership with Lincoln Business Improvement Group (BIG), a consortium created by the city centre business community and dedicated to raising the quality of experience throughout Lincoln city centre for commerce, residents and visitors alike. The organisation’s philosophy is simple: by improving the city centre experience, people will stay longer and visit more often.

Under a gazebo in Lincoln’s City Square, two soundLINCS music facilitators – Jane Pennock and Ben Smith – ran sessions with hand drums and light percussion throughout the day, working with everyone from curious toddlers to enthusiastic adults. The workshops revolved around simple sound patterns which participants could learn with ease, exploring and developing the themes into fascinating and often complex dance rhythms as their confidence grew.

For those seeking a more technology-based approach to music-making, a series of professional decks was also set up in the square, where soundLINCS’ Eddy Mentzel and Dan Tatton ran open workshops to enable participants to learn the basics of scratching and other essential skills for the budding DJ.

The Cuboid Centre, 4-8 August

A free, week-long programme of African-inspired performing workshops is being offered to young people in West Lindsey next week as part of Sing Up Lindsey, a project run by Lincolnshire Music Development Agency soundLINCS under the Government-backed national Sing Up initiative. Funding partners include West Lindsey District Council and Lincolnshire County Council Music Service.

Taking place at The Cuboid Centre in Caistor Yarborough School during the week of 4- 8 August, the programme is open to young people aged from 10-17 and involves music, dance and drama. Working with specialist soundLINCS facilitator Tracy Mason-Powers, the participants will be able to try a range of different activities - from group singing and African drumming to mask-making and film production - on themes derived from the popular ‘Lion King’ films and stage show.

Free transport is available from outlying communities, including Brookenby, Binbrook, Market Rasen, Swallow, North and South Kelsey, Keelby and Holton-le-Moor. For details, and to register, contact soundLINCS on 01522 510073 or e-mail info@soundlincs.org

Sing Up Lindsey is one of eleven Sing Up Communities across the UK which are working with children and young people who have had little experience of ongoing singing activity before. Each project aims to reach 2,000 children over the course of two years and will focus on projects ranging from whole-school singing and establishing community choirs to residential courses and composition projects based on the ideas and experiences of the children involved.

Lincolnshire Village Resounds to Xhosa Music

A Lincolnshire village echoed to the sound of traditional South African music in July when the Amandla Esandla vocal ensemble visited the Holy Trinity CE Primary School in Tattershall. Over 30 Key Stage 2 pupils, staff and support workers from schools in the area took part in an afternoon workshop, learning to sing and perform songs based on ancient Xhosa rhythms.

The event was part of a UK tour by Amandla Esandla, a five-member ensemble featuring young singers drawn from all over the Eastern Cape of South Africa. The group was visiting Lincolnshire at the invitation of the county’s Music Development Agency soundLINCS, in its role as Area Leader for Sing Up, the £40m National Singing Programme which aims to ensure that every child in every UK primary school takes part in quality group singing during each day, regardless of ability or background. The workshop for primary schools in Tattershall was followed by a free training session at Spalding Primary School for local teachers and members of the soundLINCS team of music facilitators.

The workshop with Amandla Esandla - which means literally ‘the power of five’ - is just one element in a diversity of workforce and cultural development opportunities which soundLINCS continues to provide across Lincolnshire as Sing Up Area Leader. ‘We’re delighted that we were able to welcome Amandla Esandla to Lincolnshire,’ says soundLINCS CEO Nikki-Kate Heyes. ‘Judging by the enthusiastic feedback received from the participants, the workshop and training session proved both valuable and entertaining, not only inspiring new singing skills but also heightening multi-cultural awareness within the wider community.’

Five Schools…Six Months… One BIG Day: Report on the Schools News Report Day by Sam Atkins

Lincolnshire schools teamed up with the BBC and CfBT Lincolnshire School Improvement Service to make the news headlines on March 13th this year. The big event was BBC News School Report.

BBC Radio Lincolnshire ‘adopted’ Banovallum School in Horncastle and twice a week for six months BBC broadcast journalist Sam Atkins trained ten 12 and 13 year old pupils in everything to do with radio production. Why all this effort for just one day? Well, the team at BBC Lincolnshire and CfBT Lincolnshire School Improvement Service had a unique plan: To let the pupils take over the running of BBC Radio Lincolnshire for the BBC News School Report Day! This was a first across the country and we were determined to succeed!

Four other schools in Lincolnshire also signed up for the BBC News School Report day and had the opportunity to establish their own radio clubs and podcasting websites. Everyone involved in this project put in time and effort to make it the clear success that it was… And that’s just the pupils! They gave up their own time during lunch hours, after school and at weekends to learn interview techniques, broadcasting guidelines, editorial policy, sound recording, presenting tips and podcasting!

· Walton Girls’ High School played host to BBC News 24 where they broadcasted live throughout the BBC News School Report day with presenter Jane Hill!
· Banovallum School took the reins of BBC Radio Lincolnshire starting from an impressive 6am and worked on all the shows providing live reports interviews including one with Huw Edwards, traffic and weather bulletins and a news bulletin which went out live at 2:30pm written, produced and read by the pupils!
· Haven High Technology College produced a brilliant online radio service and was visited by BBC Radio 4
· Caistor Grammar School was helped along on the report day by a BBC cameraman

Leading up to the Big Day the schools:
- visited Television Centre in London, the Blue Peter garden, BBC News 24 studios and BBC Radio Lincolnshire;
- interviewed BBC’s Kate Silverton, Huw Edwards, George Alagaih, Jane Hill, Newsround’s Helen, Lizo, Ellie and Jake, BBC News Editor Richard Cole, Supergrass, The Kills, The Hoosiers, and many more!
- watched a rehearsal for Jools Holland, The Alan Titchmarsh Show, Blue Peter and live radio shows from BBC Radio Lincolnshire.

So there you have it - Lincolnshire is now firmly on the map having shown off their broadcasting efforts not only to the county or even the country but the entire World! We have developed some formidable radio and television talent and not only have they shown visibly improved social skills, self-esteem, confidence, teamwork skills and concentration levels but they are working hard to create a legacy of radio and TV clubs within their schools. What is also highly commendable is that most of the young people involved access the news and current affairs daily and with a greater understanding.… You could call them Junior Broadcast Journalists!
